Control DFW Air Conditioning Costs This Summer With These Tips

Control DFW Air Conditioning Costs This Summer With These TipsDFW air conditioning costs may seem painfully high at times, but that doesn’t mean your only choice is to put up with them. Even in the Fort Worth/Arlington area’s sweltering summer weather, taking a few basic steps to improve your cooling system’s efficiency helps lower your expenses.

Keep your filter clean
— When dust and debris accumulate on your air filter, they interfere with normal airflow. The fan motor is forced to work harder to pull in air, which wastes energy and wears out the motor. To prevent this, check your filter monthly by removing it and holding it up to the light. If no light shines through, put in a clean filter. Replace the filter at least once every three months.

Schedule an annual inspection
— You can change the filter and clean the outdoor unit yourself, but your system also needs regular professional maintenance to stay efficient. An HVAC technician can inspect and clean the evaporator and condenser coils, verify the refrigerant charge, and test the thermostat for accuracy. Simply adjusting an incorrect refrigerant charge can reduce your cooling expenses by five to 10 percent.

Try a programmable thermostat — For every degree you set your thermostat above 78 degrees for an 8-hour period, you should save around 1 percent on your DFW air conditioning expenses. A programmable thermostat keeps your home at these energy-efficient temperatures on schedule. You’ll no longer waste energy because you forgot to turn up the thermostat before you left for work or went to bed.

Seal your ducts
— Your ducts are responsible for delivering cool air throughout your home. If they leak that air into your walls, attic and other unconditioned spaces, they reduce your system’s overall efficiency. Air sealing and insulating your ducts can boost your HVAC system’s efficiency by up to 20 percent.

Install more efficient equipment — If your existing system is more than 10 years old, upgrading to a new Energy Star-qualified system could reduce your DFW air conditioning costs by 20 to 40 percent. For installation, choose an experienced technician trained in air conditioner installation. Incorrect installation can increase your system’s operating costs by as much as 30 percent.
