What is the deal with that annoying noise your air conditioner’s making? It is keeping you up at night and irritating your neighbors, but if you don’t know what’s wrong, the racket is only going to get worse. To help you diagnose the underlying issue, here are a few common air conditioner noises and your options for reducing the sound.
Determining the noise your air conditioner’s making
- Failing compressor – This is the most common cause of irritating air conditioner noises. You may hear a banging or clanking sound, loud rattling or humming, or even explosive sounds. If this is the case, you should have an HVAC contractor conduct diagnostic testing on your compressor’s condition, as a failing compressor can only be corrected by total system replacement.
- Leaky ducts – If you notice a hissing or roaring sound, you may have a problem with leaky ducts. This should be resolved immediately as any air leaks can greatly reduce system efficiency.
- Refrigerant leak – Take any hissing or bubbling noises you hear very seriously because your refrigerant may be leaking. If a line has been punctured, you will hear a loud hissing sound. During a slower leak you will hear bubbling. Either type of leak can cause A/C failure.
- Loose or dirty parts – Do you hear rattling, ticking, clicking, or rumbling? That noise your air conditioner’s making could be due to loose parts or parts that are clogged with dirt.
Reducing air conditioner noise
Regular preventive maintenance is your strongest defense against fighting that noise your air conditioner’s making. Your cooling system should be serviced annually. During service all parts will be tightened, lubricated and cleaned. Your refrigerant levels will also be checked. In addition, planned maintenance helps reduce excess wear and tear, which increases your air conditioner’s life span and keeps HVAC warranties valid. Giving your HVAC service professional the opportunity to spot and eliminate noise-causing problems before they start goes a long way in maintaining your sanity and your system’s longevity.
