So, you’ve already scheduled your fall furnace tuneup? Terrific! Just remember that there’s more to preparing for an annual maintenance visit that simply booking the appointment. To get the most out this year’s visit, make sure that you have the following items checked off before your technician arrives.
- Know what you’ve got: Maybe this is your first home. Maybe it’s your first winter in this particular home. Or, maybe you’ve just never bothered to take a close look at your heating equipment. If you’re not sure what you’ve got, you may not get the level of service that you’d like. Many heating companies have technicians who specialize in certain types of heating equipment. If you know what kind of equipment you have when making the appointment, you’ll be sure to get the right person for the job.
- Know where it is: You can help your technician a great deal by making sure that your heating equipment is easily accessible before he/she arrives. Know where your equipment is located, and be able to show your technician where your electrical circuit breakers are, in case those have to be temporarily switched off for safety. Then, move furniture, boxes or other items out of the way so that your technician has room to maneuver.
- Know what’s going on: If you’ve noticed anything unusual with your heating equipment over the past year, be ready to describe it to your technician. Loud noises coming from the furnace or areas of extreme heat or cold throughout your home may indicate a problem that your technician will want to address. Be ready to explain how the system has been performing — it may help your technician diagnose a problem that can be fixed sooner than later.
