Repair Or Replace Air Conditioning? With This Expert Advice, You'll Know Just What To DoDeciding whether to repair or replace air conditioning can be a tough call. Replacement is an investment, but under some circumstances, repair can end up costing you more over the long run. Evaluating these two key factors can help you figure out which option will be most cost-effective in your particular case.

If your system has been around for more than 10 years, the cost of running your A/C might make replacement the more cost-efficient option. Newer systems, depending upon the type you choose, can use anywhere from 20-50 percent less energy to run. Since cooling and heating can amount to as much as half of the energy use in the average household, the savings on your utility bills could be substantial with an upgrade.

Additionally, most older systems use R-22 refrigerant. Since it is being phased out due to the harm it causes to the environment, R-22 is becoming more expensive and less easily available.

The overall condition of the A/C system in your home is another important thing to evaluate as you decide whether to repair or replace air conditioning. A system that has been well-maintained over its life span, runs dependably most of the time and is in fairly good shape may well be worth putting a little money into for repairs, especially if that system is only five or six years old or has already had major components replaced. However, if your system is showing signs of heavy wear, like excess noise and vibration or increased energy use, or has had one problem after another, chances are that those repair costs may nickel-and-dime you over time to the point that replacement would be the better option.
